What tastes better - Gelato or Ice Cream?
When people have Gelato for the first time, they are surprised by its intense flavour – far more flavoursome than ice cream. While ice cream is smooth and creamy, gelato is soft and intense and dense. Gelato is served at a warmer temperature than ice cream making it softer to the bite. It has more milk than ice cream, but less cream. Gelato may or may not contain egg yolk – some recipes do, and others don’t. 90% of our flavours are completely egg free. Gelato is churned at a slower rate than ice cream, which makes it harder for the air to get into the blend. So what you get is a smooth and silky product with a strong flavour.
There are many ways to make Gelato. We prefer to prepare ours using the traditional Italian style. Our secret Gelato recipe was developed on a beautiful Sicilian Island more than 60 years ago. This secret recipe has been passed down through the family from generation to generation ever since. So how is Gelato prepared?
Gelato starts out with a similar custard base as ice cream, except for the fact that it has a higher proportion of milk, less cream, less sugar and egg yolk or no egg yolk, depending on the recipe. Gelati (the plural of Gelato) are churned at a much slower rate than ice cream, incorporating less air, which leaves Gelato denser than ice cream. Did you know up to 50% of any given tub of ice cream is actually just thin air!
We use the traditional Italian method of deliberate slow churning, which gives the Gelati a soft, smooth texture and a perfectly natural, clean taste. Our Gelati are handmade fresh every day in small batches. We steer clear of artificial ingredients, sweeteners, colours or preservatives, allowing the natural flavours to shine through.
